The Minimalist NBA Project Part 2: Southeast Division

Here at The Sports Marketing Playbook we’re redesigning all 30 NBA team logos in a minimalist style. Part 2 is here, and in this post we’re showcasing the 5 Southeast Division teams.

This Division features two teams that took long journeys to their current homes; the Atlanta Hawks started out in Illinois as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks and came to Georgia via Milwaukee and St Louis, whilst the Washington Wizards started life as the Chicago Packers before making their way to the capital via Baltimore, when they were known as the Bullets until 1997. The Division features two Florida teams that joined the NBA during its expansion in the late 80s, the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat, and it is completed by the Charlotte Hornets, a team which was originally known as the Bobcats from its inception in 2004 until 2014. However, by this point the original Charlotte Hornets, who incidently also joined the league during the late 80’s expansion, had moved to New Orleans and switched their name to the Pelicans, thus returning the name Hornets back to North Carolina.

Complicated much?

Time to simplify things.

So without further ado, here is The Minimalist NBA Project Part 2: Southeast Division.

Atlanta Hawks

The classics Hawks colour combo of red and white.

Charlotte Hornets

At the crossroads of Charlotte teal and North Carolina blue.

Miami Heat

fuego del sol.

Orlando Magic

Magical things can happen when you combine lower and upper case.

Washington Wizards

There’s no place like home.

  1. Minimalism is one of my favourite trends for graphic design. I’ve lived in Atlanta my whole life, but I’ve never been to a Hawks game (I’m more of a baseball fan). The W in Hawks reminds me of wings, for some reason. When you’re done with this, maybe you should try MLB logos- they could really use a makeover! I’m not too interested in sports, but I love your blog!

    1. Hi Vicky, many thanks for your message and great to hear you like TSMP. You wouldn’t believe how long I spent on the W of Hawks as the centrepiece of the logo, so it was very cool to read that you noticed it. And I’ll keep your suggestion in mind for the MLB logos; perhaps a summer project once the season is in full flow. And as you’re from Atlanta, I guess that means the Braves are your team? This was also the first comment on the blog, so thanks again and I hope you enjoy the future posts here! Br /Edward
